Yoga mat care: How to keep your yoga mat clean and fresh
Careful maintenance not only extends the lifespan of your yoga mat but also plays a role in holistic training. Your mat becomes even more familiar and evolves into a calming retreat. Hygiene is also important, as you have direct skin contact with your mat during meditation or certain asanas. A clean, pleasant-smelling surface is simply more comfortable for both relaxation and intense training.
Depending on the material, there are differences in the optimal care of yoga mats. For natural wool mats, thorough airing and shaking are often sufficient, while synthetic fiber mats are usually washable.
1. Yoga mat care for self-cleaning wool mats
Since virgin wool is a natural material, it has special characteristics. Its self-cleaning properties provide a kind of natural yoga mat care. Usually, it's enough to give your wool mat a good shake after your workout and hang it out in the fresh air. However, the fleece can easily become matted. Therefore, you should only wash your virgin wool mat in emergencies – for example, if it's dirty after an outdoor workout. Just imagine you have a sheep in the tub and treat your virgin wool mat with the same care.
Lukewarm water and our wool detergent with aloe vera are particularly suitable for caring for your yoga mat. Afterwards, simply hang it on a clothesline. It will regenerate itself. Never use a hairdryer on it. If you have a high-pile mat, you need to pay attention to the "loosening" process. During this natural process, the combed wool returns to its original shape, especially when wet. Regular combing will keep it fluffy and fresh for a long time.
- easy to maintain
- Self-cleaning properties ensure basic hygiene.
- Ventilate and shake
- comb regularly
- Special care with Aloe Vera
2. Washable surface: Hygiene in synthetic fiber mats
Most of our synthetic fiber mats can be easily machine washed. Depending on the material and composition, temperatures between 30 and 60 degrees Celsius are recommended. It's best to refer to the enclosed yoga mat care instructions and adjust your washing machine accordingly. However, yoga mats should not be spun or tumble dried. After washing, simply hang them loosely on a clothesline. For light soiling or more delicate materials, a damp cloth is sufficient. If hand washing is recommended, you can rinse it in the bathtub.
A little tip for yoga mat care: Lukewarm water with a splash of vinegar neutralizes the light manufacturing film on new synthetic fiber mats. Over time, the material will become grippier on its own with regular use.
- partially machine washable
- easy cleaning
- wipeable with a damp cloth
